ATUMtome: Automated Tape Collecting Ultramicrotome

The expansion and advancement of microscopical applications has led to exciting new developments, not least in the field of 3D Array Tomography and Volume Imaging.
At Harvard University, Professor Jeff Lichtman, PhD, MD, and his team designed an instrument (ATUM) capable of collecting very large sets of serial sections (30,000+) in an unattended and computer-controlled operation, to help reconstruct the brain’s neural pathways — a precursor to one day mapping the entire human brain. The ATUM is connected to and controlled by RMC Boeckeler’s PowerTome ultramicrotome, to form the ATUMtome (Automatic Tape Collecting Ultramicrotome).

ASH2: Advanced Substrate Holder Attachment for Serial Sectioning
For Fast, Reliable Serial Section Collection For 3D Tomography.

Advanced 3D reconstruction and tomography are growing in use in today’s EM world. For small volumes, where tens to hundreds of sections are required, the Advanced Substrate Holder (ASH2) is favored for ease of use and speed.
The ASH2 is a multi-axis manipulation tool designed to precisely position substrates for the collection of ribbons of serial sections for array tomography. Standard room temperature knives and jumbo diamond knives for larger substrates can be used. Collected sections are subsequently imaged in the SEM or LM.
The ASH2 quickly mounts onto any current ultramicrotome, instantly converting it into an instrument capable of sectioning and collecting hundreds of sections. This newly designed Advanced Substrate Holder (ASH2) weighs less than 0.5kg and can be mounted directly onto modern ultramicrotomes without modification or the use of additional fixtures.
For larger volume work, please see our ATUMtome system, which is capable of effortlessly collecting thousands of sections.

LN Ultra: Cryo Attachment for PowerTome

Rapid freezing and Freeze Substitution are one method of making cellular structure and organization appear closer to the natural state but this process can limit other avenues of investigation, such as immunohistochemical applications.
Dehydration of a sample, necessary for routine electron microscopy of biological tissue, can be a major source of artifact and in many cases inhibits antibody-antigen reactions essential for immunolabelling/gold labeling studies. If a method could be found to preserve the water content in the cell during the process, this would greatly increase the scope of investigations, and the work of Professor K.T. Tokuyasu provided this breakthrough.
Today, cryosectioning and labeling of tissues and cell cultures by the ‘Tokuyasu Technique’ is a routine application in many laboratories.
Cryo ultramicrotomy sectioning of both biological and industrial materials can be achieved with the LN Ultra, a liquid nitrogen-cooled cryo-chamber attachment for the PowerTome series of ultramicrotomes. Mounted onto the PowerTome, the LN Ultra provides optimal thermal stability necessary for producing cryosections.
Capable of holding temperatures from +40°C to -185°C, the stable environment of the LN Ultra is perfect for sectioning and planning a variety of samples. These may include rubber and soft polymers, or biological cells and tissues; used for example, for immunolabelling using the Tokuyasu technique or CEMOVIS (Cryo-Electron Microscopy of Vitreous Ice Sections).
Liquid Nitrogen consumption is very low, allowing for a size efficient 15.5-liter dewar, capable of providing a stable sectioning environment for up to nine hours, depending on your technique and application, thus saving your laboratory LN2 costs over less efficient systems.

GKM2: Glass Knife Maker

The harder embedding media needed to support the tissue during the sectioning process and subsequent observation in the electron microscope necessitates a blade that is precise and robust enough to cut the very thin sections on the ultramicrotomes. Freshly broken glass with its super sharp edge provides an excellent solution for cutting the ultra-thin sections necessary.
In addition, the glass knife is preferred for teaching, trimming, and for those unknown samples which may have inclusions that can instantly damage your diamond edge.
The GKM2 glass knife maker produces the most reproducible straight-edged glass knives available. With its balanced break methodology coupled with a pressure detector readout for precise reproducibility of breaking pressure, the GKM2 is the favored knifemaker for many laboratories. The GKM2 is also the only glass knife maker in the market capable of producing up to 12mm thick glass knives.
The pressure sensor and digital display enable the operator to produce accurate knives with each controlled break. Precision micrometers accurately position glass squares for the final break into knives.

Diamond Knife for Ultra-Microtome
Our diamond knives are called “Sym Knife”. We have Ultra, Histology, Cryo and Trim types.
All knives are made in Yokohama, Japan by skillful artisans.
Syntek has been producing various kind of diamond tools more than 44 years (since 1978).
We would say, we have some know-how and experience how to produce good diamond tools.
One of the greatest advantages is all our diamond knives, except dry type have been done hydrophilic treatment well from the beginning.
You do not have to do it by yourself. It is very convenient and stress-free, isn’t it?
Plus, we have 3 original diamond knives at this moment. They are MGH, JUMBO, and JUMBO WT.
Those ones are made by Syntek only. Nobody does it.

*We prepare different colors to distinguish each knife
"MGH" is our strongly recommended knife for every ultra knife user.
It stands for "Multi Grid Holder" and nobody else makes this model as we explained as above.
This holder has 4 grooves (chases or ditches) on the surface.
There are places where you can set up to 4 grids at the same time.
Of course, experienced engineer uses this MGH, however we strongly recommend this model for beginners.
The main reason is this MGH releases your one hand free.
As you know you need to use both of your hands when you gather sectioned films into the grid, however it takes some time with skills.
If one of hands will be free, situation is going to be much easier than now.
No more stress for gathering samples. This is our target

"SYM Metalica" - Tungsten Carbide Knife

This is not made of diamond, made by Tungsten Carbide(WC).
We put a special treatment on the edge and we improved sharpness much better than existing similar knives.
We would like you to use this knife for cross-sectioning mainly, but the normal section is OK, too.
We guess you mind cutting hard material samples with your diamond knives. We understand your feelings very well. That is a main reason to develop this item as an alternative to diamond.
Even if you would like to cut a large sample, this is big enough to do, because of this wide range of width; up to 30mm.
You do cut single metals like steels. Semi-thin sectioning is also available with embedded resin blocks.
Of course, you can use this WC knife for trimming of your resin blocks, but that is too-good way of usage.
Why don’t you get this knife’s potential as much as you can?.
